Dominica Pilgrimage - Laborie

By Linvinius Fanus - Laborie

The Sacred Heart Pilgrimage to Dominica made great changes to my life. I experienced many things which I consider to be miracles through The Sacred Heart Of Jesus.

Through this great opportunity, I know the Island of Dominica; flew over and saw the Island of Martinique.

The Holy Redeemer Retreat House where we lodged is a sight to behold! Many special graces were obtained! The coming together of Pilgrims for morning prayers; for the celebration of The Holy Eucharist: the hymns of praise and worship; the making of friends and living as one family, especially my room mate Mr. Henry who became my true friend.

Through The Sacred Heart of Jesus I came to know the kind of woman that Mrs. Samuel is a mother to all- members as well as non-members of the Sacred Heart .

The Sunday morning Mass at the Roseau Cathedral was a very joyful occasion, the highlight of which was the performance by the liturgical dancerse.. At the homily, Bishop Malzaire gave a very nice message to the Sacred Heart members.

I will never forget that Pilgrimage!

I am pretty sure that no one will argue that this pilgrimage was a fantastic, beautiful, heartwarming experience (physically, emotionally and spirirtually taht on one will forget in a hurry and that includes the people from Dominica.

I truly beleive that the Holy Spirit was among us, for everything we did was done smoothy and most if not all of us had some sort of unexplained but terrific experience.

We were made very welcomed and treated most generously by our Dominican counterparts. God bless them all and we are looking forward to returning the complement next year God’s willing.

Our heartfelt thanks to the Lord and to our President Mrs Telita Samuel along with her committee.

By Aileen Jn. Pierre - Laborie Parish

Greetings to you in the name of The Sacred Heart of Jesus!

My experience at the Sacred Heart Pilgrimage in Dominica was the arrival of the second batch of pilgrims when we were met at the Airport by Father Vincent and friends.

It was a great pleasure when we arrived at the Retreat House, where the members who had traveled the day before, gave us a hearty welcome with songs and hugs, all in the name of The Sacred Heart of Jesus!

There was a feeling of peace and tranquility for the three days. To me it was like a taste of Heaven with Angels singing praises. My most memorable moments were the Prayer Time in the morning. The Sunday Mass at the Cathedral and the dancers who performed with taste and talent. After the collection when I was chosen to carry the bread to be consecratd, I became filled with joy, The moment at the procession after the collection where I was chosen to carry the chalice with the bread to be consecrated. My feeling was very emotional, but one of joy.

In Dominica we lived as one big happy family a family with much love and togetherness.

My room mate was very loving and kind. Although we live close to each other (she from Augier and I from Laborie) we never knew each other until we were paired as room mates. We got along very well; we did everything together, until we returned to St. Lucia. The moment of parting was very sad, but we have kept in touch by phone with each other since the following morning.

Dominica is a beautiful place. The people are very friendly and nice. I enjoyed the tours where I saw much of the Island.

Finally I wish to thank you Mrs. Samuel for your hard work which made this Pilgrimage such a big success.

In the name of The Sacred Heart of Jesus, God bless all the new friends.

BARBADOS - BRIDGETOWN

WORLD YOUTH DAY ACTIVITIES BEGIN IN BARBADOS

World Youth Day preparations have begun in earnest in the Bridgetown diocese, starting with a morning of activities co-ordinated by the Catholic Youth Commission (CYC) on September 5.

About 80 young persons interested in attending WYD in Cologne Germany in June 2005 participated in the morning Mass and ceremony at St. Dominic's Church, Christ Church .

Bishop of Bridgetown Malcolm Galt addressed them on the WYD theme “ We have come to worship Him… The Eucharist as Food for the journey. ” The theme was derived from the words of the Magi who went to see the Baby Jesus in the stable in Bethlehem , noted the bishop.

Legend has it that, in the 11 th century, the relics of Magi were brought to the Cathedral in Cologne . Cologne is considered as the Catholic capital of Germany , he said and is over 1900 years old.

Past pilgrims who had attended WYD in Canada , shared their experiences with the group. Catherine Anthony of St. Patrick's parish spoke of the warm welcome their delegation received from host families, and the excitement of meeting Catholics from all over the world.

On Saturday October 16 th , the CYC held its first fund-raising activity to help send pilgrims to Cologne . This was a cruise aboard the M.V. Harbour Master in and around the Bridgetown Harbour .

GRENADA - ST. GEORGE'S

COUNSELLING FOR TRAUMATISED PERSONS

Bishop Vincent Darius of St. George's-in-Grenada , has announced that professional counseling will soon be provided for persons who were traumatized as a result of Hurricane Ivan.

This concern was raised during discussions when Caribbean Conference of Churches (CCC) representatives Rev. Dr. Knolly Clarke and Adanna James paid a solidarity visit to the bishop in the aftermath of the Hurricane.

At that meeting Rev. Clarke noted that while he acknowledged the very basic needs of food, shelter and clothing, other groups were forthcoming with these items and it was up to the church to provide something different. In that light he indicated that the CCC would like to focus on post-traumatic stress counseling.

On Sunday October 10 while presiding at the National Commercial Banks (NCB) 25 th anniversary Eucharistic celebration at the Grenville Church , Bishop Darius said that people are traumatized even now – whenever it rains or the wind blows or a little thunder and lightening signal bad weather, people become frightened and frantic. He said he had met with Waveney Richards, President of the Association of Professional Psychologists of Trinidad & Tobago as well as Sr. Julie Peters, SSM. Very soon counseling clinics will be set up throughout the diocese.

As part of this process a service of healing and celebration of the Eucharist was held recently at the Battle Hill Shrine in Grenada .

HAITI , PORT-AU-PRINCE

POPE DONATES US$100,000 TO ASSIST HAITI

Pope John Paul II donated US$100,000 to fund relief efforts in flood-stricken Haiti . Through the Vatican 's charity arm COR UNUM, the Pope earmarked the money to help CARITAS HAITI purchase drinking water, food and medicine after the string of powerful tropical storms and hurricanes that hit the Caribbean in recent weeks.

The Pope's gift was announced by the Vatican September 27 after CARITAS INTERNATIONALIS launched a major appeal for funding relief efforts in Haiti . CARITAS is seeking US$900,000 in funding and donations to provide supplies to tens of thousands of people left homeless by tropical storm Jeanne.

Mudslides triggered by heavy flooding killed more than 1,600 people and injured 100,000 more in Haiti after the storm hit the island in mid-September.

At least another 1000 people are reportedly still missing and feared dead.

MEXICO - GUADALAJARA

PAPAL ENVOY “ASK WHO, NOT WHAT THE EUCHARIST IS”

Tens of thousands of people flocked to Guadalajara 's Jalisco Stadium to attend the Mass opening the 48 th International Eucharistic Congress. This congress signaled the official beginning of the Year of the Eucharist declared by Pope John Paul II to run from Sunday October 17 to October 2005.

For many, Pope John Paul II's envoy, Cardinal Jozef Tomko, crystallized the congress main focus as he led the October 10 opening Mass, urging people to ask who the Eucharist is not what the Eucharist is.

“That was an amazing phrase. I think everybody will remember it” said Auxiliary Bishop Patrick J. Zurek of San Antonio , Texas , as fireworks lit up the stadium at the close of the Mass.

The Ordination Mass was a glorious one. The Cathedral was packed to overflowing. In attendance were Bishop Malcolm Galt, CSSp of Barbados and 16 priests who concelebrated. Attending the Ordination were people from Trinidad, Grenada, Barbados, St. Lucia, Dominica, England, Canada and the USA.
In the congregation were the retired Anglican Dean Ulrick Smith and an Anglican priest Rev. Pruvin Phillips as well as former Anglican parishioners of father Paynter. It is reported that Fr. Paynter is the fourth former Anglican priest who has worked in our region and is now a Roman Catholic priest.
On Monday October 11 Fr. Paynter celebrated his first Mass at the shrine of Our Lady at Yambou at the Pastoral Centre.

TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO
PORT OF SPAIN.
MEETING OF THE PERMANENT BOARD OF THE AEC

Each year the permanent board of the Antilles Episcopal Conference holds two meetings: the first in September and the other one in January. These meetings are in fact inter- sessional meetings of the executive of the Bishops Conference which has its annual Plenary Meeting in May of each year two weeks after Easter. From September 21- 24, 2004 the Permanent Board met in Port of Spain and following are some of the main decisions taken:

1. To show solidarity with the bishops of Grenada, Mandeville and the Episcopal Conference of Haiti-the places that suffered the most severe damage from the recent natural disasters and that have the least financial resources to respond to the crisis- the bishops authorized that letters of solidarity be sent from the Conference along with donations to help with the process of recovery.
2. Up-coming Pastoral Letters:. The bishops were updated on the present status of two Pastoral Letters which are being prepared for publication by the Conference (1) ON LIFE ISSUES (2) ON THE ENVIRONMENT. Drafts are expected to be available for the January meeting of the Permanent Board.

3. Caribbean Conference of Churches: The general secretary of the CCC has informed the AEC of the date and venue for the seventh general assembly of the Caribbean Conference of Churches: June 9 - 16, 2005 in Panama City, Panama. The bishops will appoint representatives in January 2005.

4. Call To Mission : The Youth Commission has completed the guidelines for Call to Mission a programme calling youth (20 to 35) to serve the Lord by living an intense experience of the Christian life in a setting that rises above geographical boundaries. This initiative grew out of the AEC Youth Assembly which took place in Port-of-Spain last year. It will give young people the opportunity to give voluntary services within the diocese and archdioceses of the AEC. This service could be short term- three weeks to three months - or long term-one year to two years. Each candidate for mission must first complete a six week programme of study and formation at the Regional Seminary.

The Bishops of the region are trying to help the people of the Caribbean Church deepen their Catholic identity, come together as a community and involve themselves in mission. They ask that the Catholic faithful pray for the Episcopal Conference that God will bless its efforts to bring new hope and service to the people of the region.
