 History Of Caritas Antilles

Caritas Antilles is a member of the Catholic international humanitarian, relief development and social service network Caritas Internationalis. Caritas Internationalis is a confederation of 162 Catholic relief, development and social service organisations working to build a better world, especially for the poor and oppressed, in over 200 countries and territories .

Caritas Antilles' approach is based on the Social Teaching of the Church, which focuses on the dignity of the human person. Therefore, Caritas Antilles works on behalf of the poor, whilst manifesting the love of God for all of creation.

Caritas Antilles was established through the Antilles Episcopal Conference in the mid eighties and became an official member in 1989. However a full fledged office was opened with Saint Lucia as its headquarters in 1992. At that time Mr. David Popo was employed as the Regional Coordinator. His tenure lasted four years when Father Leslie Lett succeeded Mr. Popo as Regional Coordinator in 1996. In early 1998, the Caritas Antilles Regional office was moved to the island of Trinidad and Tobago .

In May 2003, the Regional Office was once again moved to Saint Lucia with a newly appointed Coordinator, Ms. Marcia Boxill. This time around Caritas Antilles encompassed the Province of Castries [ Antigua and Barbuda , Dominica , Grenada , Saint Lucia and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines ]. Each Diocese has a Diocesan Coordinator and a Caritas National Team. The President of Caritas Antilles is His Grace, the Archbishop Kelvin E. Felix who also presides over the Province of Castries . The Caritas Antilles Regional Office reports to the Antilles Episcopal Conference (A.E.C).

Caritas Antilles is currently in the process of reinitiating its activities within the Province of Castries . Caritas national and parish teams have been formed in each Diocese. They work on a voluntary basis and meet periodically to assess the needs of the various communities within their Dioceses, in order to develop programmes which could empower the poor and needy persons.

Caritas Antilles fights poverty, exclusion, intolerance and discrimination. More importantly, it empowers people to participate fully in all matters affecting their lives, and it advocates on their behalf at national and international forums.
